3DA: Why have you decided to work in 3d-field and when have you started?
AJ: I started doing 3D about 2 or 3 years ago, in 2010 when I was at the university. At this time I studied Interior Design at the CREAD Institut in Lyon (France). I was interested in 3D because it was (in my view) the easiest and most efficient way to show and explain my different interior projects that I made during my studies. I learned mostly by my own. Thanks to the Internet I could have found thousands of tutorials & making-of…. It then became a real passion and when I graduated (in 2013) I founded my own 3D studio (Effective 3D) instead of working as Interior designer for an agency.
3DA: Describe to our readers your usual workflow.
AJ: At first there’s a brief (from the client) or an idea (for personal projects). Then I always try to gather as many reference pictures as possible which is really important since we always try to reproduce the real world. And then it’s all about 3D : * Modeling * Lighting * Texturing * Rendering * Post-Production… As softwares I use 3dsmax design 2014, V-Ray 3 & Adobe CC (Photoshop, After Effects). I also use different additional softwares & plugins such as Marvelous Designer, Forest Pro…
3DA: What was most difficult for you when you just started working in 3D? And what is now?
AJ: I think the most difficult was to start… There are so many things to learn about 3D that when I started I did not know what should I learn first. I remember that the very first tutorial I watched online was «RIM-116 Missile Launcher» by Ben Tate on CGTuts+. It also was the first time that I opened 3DS Max and it was so difficult to follow…
3DA:Looking back on your education process what you would have changed now? And what you consider right and would do exactly the same?
AJ: I would not change my background education since that’s what makes me discover the 3D world and so my true passion. Maybe I wish I have started working with 3D earlier!
3DA: Which was the biggest problem that you faced working on a project and how have you solved it?
AJ: I think that was for my graduation project. I was working on a laptop (Asus N53JQ) which I still have… At this time I did not know that much about proxies and scattering software and the scene was full with different type of vegetation and trees. I had to manage a scene with lots of polygons and geometry. The file was so huge that I had to make specific scenes for each camera… I remember having lots of crashes from 3ds max with this fantastic and lovely message « An error has occurred and the application will now close… »
3DA: What forecast you can make about the future of 3d-world in general?
AJ: I think that the 3D World is going where photorealism is. Nowadays, hardwares & softwares are much more efficient and put in our hands real tools to generate photorealistic renders and to build the future CG World !
