Do you create 3d walkthrough for your design and architecture projects? Do you use realtime rendering technology for that purpose?

With this post we would like to start a discussion about the use of realtime “videogame” technologies for architectural visualizations and invite all 3d-artist to share their experience in this subject and to show their animations created with Unity or Unreal Engine.

If you are still in doubt which technology to choose, we want to inspire you with an amazing videos done by CG-artist Benoit Dereau.

We can compare realtime presentation of an elegant Parisian flat created with Unreal Engine 4

and a walkthrough another apartment that he created with Unity 4.6 last November

The visual difference is obvious and speaks by itself.

Another possible option is the integration of offline V-RAY rendering abilities to Unity and Oculus Rift realtime presentations. For those who want to know more of “behind the scene” and understand better a general approach to this technique, here is the recording of the workshop of Luca Deriu during View Conference 2014 in Turin in October 2014.

My approach is very experimental. I have background in realtime technologies with Unity, Unreal Technology and Unigine, but I always find difficult to explain to my students why and how to migrate from offline rendering systems to realtime. This is why in my research I focused mostly on the pipeline for architects and designers who may have invested long time in learning how to obtain stunning pre-rendered images. We all see that Unity and Unreal offers an amazing quality and real stereoscopical possibilities, but my approach is not intended as a challenge, it is an extra option for those who want to demonstrate their already made 3d scenes with Oculus Rift.

Once again: do join 3D Architettura on facebook to discuss realtime technologies for architectural presentations.
