3DA: How did you start working in 3D field? How much time has been passed and what kind of studies did you do?
JGC: I started with the this world when I was finishing my career of architecture in Barcelona, Spain, long time ago. For the first time at the university, the computers were opened for student´s use…and I spent a lot of hours without moving of the chair. You can imagine how excited I was, in 1987, doing 3D with a computer.
I bought my first machine around 1989. So, sadly to say it, more than 23 years from start until now; long period in which I worked on more than 200 projects, some very simple but other really complicated. I began in Barcelona at my own study called “Efectos de arquitectura”. These days, with my partner Albert Gassul, we developed great projects to Jean Nouvel and many other architects. Hard to render more than outline renders and then “painted” in the first version of Photoshop.
Later, in 1992, I went back to my citty, Zaragoza, were I started my work of architecture and, at the same time, I founded my first company : arquitectura de SINTESIS.
Around 2000, my team of one person grew up: César Ramos and Pablo Rapún joined me and we found GAYARRE infografía.

3DA: Which are your favourite software and plugins for your daily projects?
JGC: During almost 10 years, we used EIAS like a primary software. Very fast and powerful renderer. Nowadays, it has been updated to the last version 9.0. But some years ago, we decide to change and we choose the combination of Cinema4D and VrayforC4D.

3DA: Tell us something about a project that gave you great satisfactions
JGC: Without any doubts, it was Expo Zaragoza 2008. From 2002 until 2004, we made a lot of animations to convince that our city woulded be the best candidate to win. Fortunately, Zaragoza was choosen and, during 2008, we greatly enjoy our success: we were very proud to be a part that made our city the winner of the Expo contest. It was a really hard work based on a main challange: nothing was defined but continuousely evolving. We ended up with good animations as result of two years of work and improvements.

3DA: From where do you take inspiration for your artworks?
JGC: Normally, films and photography. We spent the majority of time, look at the films with a technical point of view and this helped us to learn a lot. Of course, we also constantly admire and inspect the architectural visualization masters. Even if we are more than 20 years old in this industry-art, we need to learn each day. Sadly we see how other, with less time on the market, made some works better but sometimes the result depends on the confidence with the client and his decision to let artists free. This takes the final output to better visual results, because of less constraints.

3DA: How do you live this period of economic crisis? How is it in your country?
JGC: Bad, very bad. We had seen how the main companies like us disappeared from the market. I have no memories of other period like this in my country. It´s a sad situation but in my opinion, the only way to overcome this period is to be optimist and keep working hard with illusions.

3DA: What would you suggest to people that are approaching to 3D and architecture?
JGC: Like EIAS promotion payoff sais: “work hard, render fast and retire young”. Even if the last part of the sentence sounds too much optimistic, the others are absolutely needed. Only with a tons of efforts you´ll be able to obtain fully satisfacting and economically proficuous images or animations. Always look at the trees, the birds, the sky, to grab in your memory how nature “works” then, go to the computer and test/think and re-test-re-think to finally obtain your art piece. Good luck !
