On Monday March 23, 2015, Pixar Animation Studios published an official press-release about RenderMan software becoming free for non-commercial use. The free version does not have any watermarks or logos and works with OS X, Windows and Linux. At the moment RenderMan has plugins for Maya, other plugins for 3ds Max, Blender and Rhino are considered possible, while plugins for Cinema 4D are still in development.
Pixar promised to make RenderMan free already last year. but was postponing the release. RenderMan was used, besides Pixar own productions, for many Hollywood blockbusters, such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Titanic and others.
After Unreal Engine becoming free earlier this month this is a good news and a good tendency for free professional software.
