3DA: How did you start working in 3D field? How much time has been passed and what kind of studies did you do?
LD: I’m graduated at Raffles College of Higher Education on December 2010 with a title of Bachelor of Design in Interior Design. I studied interior-architecture, focusing more on Interior Design. I started to learn 3D when I was at college, but it was merely a modeling class and basic rendering provided by the college. Sooner, I started to feel that “hey, If I can design well but others could not see the way it should be, then my design is just worthless”. Then that was when I started to browse through digital art books, Google etc and finally I found an article about Vray. The urge to develop my cgi skills (Vray and Photoshop) came in the middle of the year 2010 and that when I was doing my third semester in my bachelor of Design class, just one semester before I graduated. At first, it was really hard, struggling with all the user interface, lighting, settings, etc but it was fun because I was the first in my class to use Vray. People around started to wow-ing here and there. I got help from my friend’s friend but it wasn’t much though and so all along the way, I learned it by myself and of course the help of Google haha. Now it has been 2 years since I first laid fingers on Vray itself and I am still learning now, there are so many great and talented 3D artists out there!
3DA: Which are your favourite software and plugins for your daily projects?
LD: I do mostly interior rendering, but sometime I do have clients asking for exterior rendering. So my favorite plugins will be Vray as render engine, ivy generator, floor generator and multi-texture.
3DA: Tell us something about a project that gave you great satisfactions
LD: Hmmm, a landed property here in Singapore. The client was Asia Regional Director of HSBC bank, he wanted contemporary-australian design concept which was fun and challenging in terms of materials, kinda picky and strict but the client was a nice couple. The real challenge was when I knew the wife was actually an 3D artist as well, she is a senior animator instructor and she knows Vray. So the first few attempts of my design proposal could not really impress her as she said that my rendering lacked of realism and that was quite stressful though haha. But I overcome it anyway, I pushed myself harder, tried new ways here and there, and I finally earned her respect. It was kinda hard with just 2 years of experience haha.
3DA: From where do you take ispiration for your artworks?
LD: I really admire Bertrand Benoit, I think you know why ;)
3DA: How do you live this period of economic crisis? How is it in your country?
LD: Here in Singapore, business is quite good not so bad, just need to know where to fish and you will get great fishes ;)
3DA: What would you suggest to people that are approaching to 3D and architecture?
LD: Don’t give up. Don’t get easily satisfied with your works. Push yourself harder and don’t ever avoid criticism, like it rough or bad or good, you have to accept it. CGI can really help your financial issues if you really have the heart to do it. CGI will help you to be more confident in your design presentation as well. Always remember, “the appearance of an object, is the one that’s gonna wow people”.
